Egg freezing in Bosnia and Herzegovina

You may be thinking about egg freezing before medical treatment or to explore future options. It means collecting eggs now and storing them for possible use later, with decisions and costs at both stages.

A consultation gives you space to discuss what the process involves, whether it is appropriate and what remains uncertain.

At a glance

Purpose

Store unfertilised eggs for possible future treatment.

Process

Stimulation, monitoring and egg collection come before freezing.

Expectation

Freezing eggs does not guarantee a future baby.

Budget

Include collection, recurring storage and the separate cost of later use.

What happens to the eggs?

Medicines stimulate the ovaries, and the team monitors their response before collecting eggs. Suitable eggs are frozen without being fertilised.

Ask what the assessment can tell you about the likely response to collection now, and what remains uncertain about later use.

Consider suitability without a promise

Age at collection and the eggs available matter. A cycle can end without eggs suitable for freezing. Ask what your findings mean without treating an egg count as a personal guarantee.

Compare egg freezing with other appropriate options in the consultation. If embryo freezing is discussed, understand the differences in consent and future use. Its legal availability depends on the proposed treatment location and your circumstances.

Local availability and storage rules

Your reason for freezing eggs and where they would be stored affect which rules apply. Before committing, ask the clinic to confirm in writing whether you can proceed and the exact storage arrangements.

If you need to extend storage because your fertility is at risk, ask whether the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s specific rules apply to you. The clinic must explain the required commission approval, age limits and the rules for the institution storing the eggs. These extension rules do not by themselves allow freezing for non-medical reasons. Banja Luka is in Republika Srpska, where separate rules apply.

Know what the visit requires

Ask how many monitoring appointments are anticipated, which can happen near home and when you need to be at the clinic. Collection timing depends on the response, so leave flexibility in travel arrangements.

Clarify the anaesthesia or sedation, preparation and arrangements for someone to accompany you afterwards. If fertility preservation is related to cancer or another urgent treatment, the fertility and treating teams need to agree timing. Do not delay essential medical care to arrange a trip.

Compare the present and future costs

  • Consultation, investigations and screening
  • Medicines, monitoring, collection and anaesthesia
  • Laboratory assessment, freezing and initial storage
  • Annual charges, renewal and administration
  • Later thawing, fertilisation, transfer and associated care
  • Travel, accommodation and changes to the planned stay

Collection is one stage; storage is an ongoing agreement. Check what remains payable if the cycle is cancelled or no eggs can be stored. The storage contract should explain who holds the eggs, keeping contact details current, missed payments and decisions about continued storage.

Risks and decisions about stopping

Stimulation can cause ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), when the ovaries respond too strongly. Collection can cause bleeding, infection or injury; anaesthesia has its own risks. Contact the treating team promptly for abdominal pain or bloating, vomiting or faintness after stimulation. Seek immediate local emergency care for breathing difficulty or chest pain.

If another collection is proposed, discuss its expected value, cost and burden. You do not have to pursue a particular egg count.

Aftercare now, storage over time

Before leaving, ask when you will receive the final storage record and whom to contact about recovery. Obtain clear instructions for urgent symptoms and let the clinician advise on flying or activity.

For the longer term, confirm permitted storage duration, consent renewal and the rules on future use, withdrawal, death or loss of decision-making capacity. Ask what would be required to move the eggs elsewhere. UK storage periods are not a substitute for the local terms.

Common questions

Do frozen eggs guarantee a baby?

No. Eggs may not survive thawing or lead to embryos suitable for transfer. Age when the eggs were collected and later treatment affect the chance of a baby; no number stored removes that uncertainty.

Are thawed eggs placed directly in the womb?

No. They first need to be fertilised with sperm in the laboratory to create embryos. A suitable embryo may then be transferred. Later thawing, fertilisation and transfer are separate treatment stages and costs.

How is egg freezing different from embryo freezing?

Egg freezing stores eggs before they are fertilised. Embryo freezing stores embryos created after eggs are fertilised with sperm. Ask how the choice affects consent, storage and future use in the place where you would be treated; UK rules do not establish your eligibility in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
