How to compare treatment quotes

Two quotes can describe very different things, even when the treatment name looks the same. Start by checking the proposed care, then compare the total cost and the arrangements around it.

Keep the written proposals together and mark anything that needs clarification before paying a deposit or booking travel.

Check that you are comparing the same care

Identify the procedure, number of teeth, eyes or other treatment units, clinician, facility and main materials or components. For dental implants, does the price cover the final teeth? For cataract surgery, which lens and which eye are included? For IVF, where does the quoted cycle begin and end?

If the plans differ, ask the clinicians why. A coordinator can help organise the answers, but a cheaper plan should not be treated as clinically equivalent without that explanation.

Make a complete cost list

Write down the treatment fee and the cost of assessment, tests, medicines, anaesthesia, materials, planned reviews and rehabilitation where relevant. Add accommodation, transport, language support, companion costs, any coordination fee and any repeat visits. Mark each amount as confirmed, estimated or not yet known.

Keep currencies and dates visible. Check whether tax or other mandatory charges are included, how long the quote is valid and how a currency conversion has been calculated. Avoid treating an old online price as a current personal quote.

Ask what could change

A plan may change after examination or further tests. The proposal should explain which decisions are still provisional, how additional treatment would be discussed and when you would be asked to approve a revised cost.

Clarify payment stages, deposits, cancellations and refunds. Ask what happens if the clinic postpones treatment, if you decide not to proceed after assessment, or if you need a longer stay. Do not assume travel bookings share the clinic’s cancellation terms.

Read aftercare and complication terms

Ask which follow-up appointments are included and where they take place. Who provides care after you return home? If you need to return to the clinic, which medical and travel costs would you pay? What does any advertised guarantee actually cover?

A guarantee may have conditions, exclusions and time limits. Keep those terms with the quote. It does not replace an aftercare plan or insurance.

Keep a comparison checklist

  • Clinic, treating clinician and treatment site
  • Exact treatment and materials; items included and excluded
  • Visits and follow-up: where, when and who provides them
  • Confirmed total, estimates and costs not yet known
  • Payment dates, cancellation terms and possible extra costs
  • Questions still awaiting an answer

Leave unknowns visible. A quote with fewer answered questions is not necessarily cheaper. It may simply be less complete.

Prepare for your consultation

Prepare questions about your options, the complete costs, the clinician responsible for your care and follow-up at home before booking.
