Braces and aligners suit different tooth movements.
Braces or clear aligners can change how your teeth look and meet. The biggest question when considering treatment abroad is often practical: can you sustain the visits and care needed throughout the course, and afterwards?
The treating clinician sets the appliance, review schedule and retention plan.
Braces and aligners suit different tooth movements.
Treatment needs regular reviews over a sustained period.
A home clinician must agree before taking over care.
Keeping the result involves care after active treatment ends.
Orthodontic assessment considers the position of the teeth and how the jaws meet. Straightening can address crowding, gaps and bite problems; it is not simply choosing the least visible appliance. Teeth and gums need to be assessed before movement begins.
Fixed braces use brackets and wires. Clear aligners are a sequence of removable trays made to move teeth gradually. They need consistent wear, and more complex movements may require additional techniques. A scan and an attractive simulation alone are not a complete clinical assessment.
An individual plan may involve extractions or other preparatory dental work. Being offered a short course does not mean it will address the whole bite. Discuss what will change, what will remain and whether leaving things as they are is reasonable.
Check which appliance the practice offers for your case. A general orthodontic service does not mean every type of brace or clear aligner is available.
Regular appointments allow the clinician to review progress and adjust treatment. Routine checks with your usual dentist also continue. Consider work, caring commitments, school and the cost of repeat journeys before beginning.
If you expect reviews at home, speak to that clinician first. They may use different appliances or may not accept responsibility for a course started elsewhere. A remote update is not automatically a replacement for an examination or repair.
A useful visit plan has room for a broken appliance, a lost tray or a change in progress. Know where you can get help between scheduled trips and how the two clinicians will communicate if care is shared.
Soreness after fitting or adjustment is common. Poor cleaning and frequent sugary food or drink can cause permanent marks on teeth. Gum problems, changes to tooth roots and movement back towards the original positions are other issues to discuss.
The appliance changes daily routines: cleaning around brackets, removing trays for meals where instructed, and remembering the wear schedule. Have the clinician demonstrate cleaning and explain what to do if it rubs or breaks. Persistent severe pain deserves contact with the treating team.
Distinguish an appliance fee from the fee for managing the complete course. Clear written terms are especially useful if treatment takes longer than expected or you need to change clinician.
Retainers help maintain the new positions. Retention is a long-term commitment, and both fixed and removable retainers need care. The clinician gives your wear and review schedule. A broken retainer or a new fit problem needs attention rather than waiting for the next journey.
Keep the appliance details and final records. Moving home or changing jobs should not leave you without someone responsible for the next review.
You can state a preference, but the tooth movements needed determine the suitable options. Some complex cases require fixed appliances or additional techniques; clear trays are not interchangeable with every brace plan.
Only plan this after both clinicians agree the responsibilities, records, costs and appliance arrangements. A transfer can interrupt progress, and acceptance should not be assumed.
No. Teeth can move after active treatment, so retention is part of maintaining the result. The wear schedule and replacement arrangements belong in the plan from the beginning.
