Shoulder arthroscopy in Bosnia and Herzegovina

If shoulder pain or instability is limiting everyday tasks, understand the proposed repair and recovery before arranging surgery abroad.

The words “keyhole surgery” describe how the surgeon reaches the joint. They do not tell you how much treatment is planned or how soon you can use the arm normally.

Understand the proposed operation

Shoulder arthroscopy allows a surgeon to look inside the joint and carry out treatment through small incisions. It may be used for problems such as rotator cuff tears or instability. Surgery is not the first treatment for many shoulder conditions.

The rotator cuff is the group of muscles and tendons helping control the shoulder. Repairing a torn tendon is a different undertaking from inspecting or removing loose material. The operation name should describe what will be done, not just the camera used.

Start with the diagnosis

Bring previous scans and reports, details of physiotherapy or injections, and a description of movements that cause trouble. Tell the specialist whether the shoulder slips, interrupts sleep or makes work difficult. Your dominant hand and usual responsibilities matter to planning.

Understand how the examination and images support the recommendation. Physiotherapy, medicines, changes in activity or another type of operation may be relevant alternatives. A good explanation connects the choice to your particular problem rather than promising a quick fix.

Confirm the shoulder procedure

The proposal should specify whether the planned arthroscopy addresses instability or a rotator cuff problem, and what treatment is intended.

The clinic proposal should specify the operating team and location and distinguish any repair from other treatment. If findings during surgery could change the procedure, discuss the possible changes in consent, recovery and price beforehand.

Compare the full cost

Separate consultation and imaging from surgery, anaesthesia, hospital care and any anchors or other implants. Include medicines, sling provision, wound reviews, physiotherapy and the planned handover to a therapist near home.

Find out whether the proposed package includes all rehabilitation appointments or only the first visit. Establish the arrangements for a longer admission, a changed operation or a complication. Accommodation and support with daily tasks belong in the budget too.

Risks to discuss

Possible risks include bleeding, infection, blood clots and damage to nerves or blood vessels. Persistent pain, stiffness and failure of a repair also need a procedure-specific explanation. The surgeon and anaesthetist should explain how your health affects these risks.

Fever, wound discharge, unexpected numbness, severe bleeding or substantial swelling, or pain not controlled by the prescribed treatment needs clinical advice straight away. Chest pain or difficulty breathing warrants immediate local emergency care. Do not wait for a website response.

Recovery and aftercare

After a rotator cuff repair, the arm may need a sling to protect healing tissue. Exercises and restrictions should come from the surgeon and physiotherapist; starting too much too soon can damage the repair. Rehabilitation may continue for months.

Plan around dressing, washing, cooking and carrying luggage with reduced use of one arm. Arrange practical help and comfortable accommodation. A small skin wound does not mean the tendon underneath is ready for lifting or work.

Before returning home, have the operation report, wound-care instructions, rehabilitation restrictions and a therapy appointment arranged. The surgeon should advise on travel, driving and work for the actual procedure. There is no single recovery or flight timetable for every shoulder arthroscopy.

Common questions

Is keyhole surgery always a short recovery?

No. For example, a rotator cuff repair can mean wearing a sling for several weeks and continuing rehabilitation for months, despite small skin incisions. The tendon needs time to heal. Your surgeon and physiotherapist set the protection, exercises and return to work for the repair actually performed.

Can I continue physiotherapy near home?

Often that is the practical aim, but the therapist needs the operation details and surgeon’s protocol. Agree the handover and first appointment before travelling so someone is responsible for continuing your rehabilitation.

What if the surgeon finds more damage than expected?

Discuss that possibility before giving consent. Understand which additional treatment you would agree to and how it could change costs, restrictions and follow-up.
