Dental implants in Bosnia and Herzegovina

An implant quote may leave out the final tooth or a return visit. This guide explains the full treatment plan, the costs to include and the follow-up to arrange at home before you book.

Your dentist examines your mouth and explains whether implants are an appropriate option.

What are dental implants?

A dental implant replaces a tooth root and can support a crown, bridge or denture. The visible replacement tooth is a separate part of treatment, usually attached through a connecting piece called an abutment. Those separate parts explain why an advertised implant price may be only part of the cost.

Implants may support one replacement tooth, several teeth or a full arch (the row of teeth in one jaw). The plan also needs to explain what you will use until the final teeth are fitted, including any temporary teeth.

Are implants right for you?

Whether an implant is suitable depends on your oral health, available bone and medical history. Some people need preparation or bone grafting first. A bridge, dentures or leaving a gap may also be options, depending on the case. The assessment should explain why the proposed choice suits you and how it compares with those alternatives. The plan should also name who will place the implants and who will fit the final teeth.

A photograph or online enquiry can begin the discussion, but it does not replace the examination and investigations your clinician considers necessary. If you already have a dental assessment, ask what information would help the receiving clinic review your enquiry. Ask the clinic how to send any requested records securely.

Understand the stages before booking travel

An implant plan may involve assessment, preparatory treatment, implant placement, healing and fitting the final restoration. The sequence varies. Healing can mean that treatment is spread over more than one visit, and some patients need further procedures before an implant can be placed.

A visit for implant placement may be only one part of treatment. The written schedule needs to include fitting the final teeth and explain what changes if healing takes longer. That is the schedule to use when considering travel; a short advertised stay is not evidence that every stage will be completed.

Compare the complete cost

Compare the proposed course of care, not just the price of one implant. The written cost breakdown should cover:

  • Assessment, scans and any preparatory dental work
  • The implant, connecting component and final crown, bridge or denture
  • Temporary teeth and laboratory work, where relevant
  • Anaesthesia, medicines and planned follow-up
  • Further visits, travel and accommodation
  • Maintenance, repairs and arrangements if a problem develops

Include repeat trips in your total. The proposal should identify exclusions and explain which findings or changes to treatment could alter the price.

Risks and care over time

An implant may fail to join with the jawbone, and components can loosen or wear. Other risks include infection, inflammation around the implant and loss of supporting bone. Depending on placement, nearby nerves can be affected, causing altered sensation or numbness. Smoking and poor oral health can increase the risk of some problems. Your clinician should explain the risks relevant to your plan, including any bone grafting, and how problems would be managed.

For unexpected or worsening symptoms, contact the treating dental team promptly. If you need urgent help, seek local urgent or emergency care rather than waiting for a website reply. Keep the clinic’s aftercare instructions and contact details with you.

Before deciding, agree who will provide routine maintenance after you return home. Ask whether a local dentist is willing to take on that care, what information they need and what it will cost. A promise of a “guarantee” should be read alongside its exclusions, time limits and any requirement to return to the treating clinic.

Recovery and follow-up

Your dental team’s written instructions should explain how to look after your mouth, what you can eat, which activities to avoid and when to attend reviews or travel. Your individual plan takes priority over a general recovery timeline.

TourismBiH has destination information for you or a companion. Keep any activities flexible and follow your clinician’s advice during recovery.

Common questions

Will the final teeth be fitted when the implants are placed?

Not necessarily. A staged implant plan commonly allows several months for healing in the bone before the final teeth are fitted, with further appointments to check their fit. Ask what teeth, if any, you will have during healing, whether they are temporary and which visits are included in your individual plan.

What if there is not enough bone for an implant?

Your dentist may discuss a bone graft to build up the area that would support the implant. This can change the procedures, healing time and cost. Ask whether grafting would happen before or during implant placement, and what other ways of replacing the tooth are suitable for you.

What records should I keep for future care?

Keep the implant system and connecting-part details alongside the record of the final teeth, treatment and aftercare. These describe the separate parts a dentist may need to identify when caring for you later.
